All art is an abstraction, and painting is putting colored marks on a flat surface. The marks may form a recognizable image but as Rene Magritte painted below his pipe "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" ("This is not a pipe") - the painting is not the object.
Painting is my way of my of investigating different styles and ways of abstraction to explore my world through landscape, objects, or emotions. Some of my paintings are more about various materials and processes used to create texture and build up surface variety. The items include joint compound, sub-floor leveling mix, perlite, and texture modeling compound. Each creates different surfaces and takes paint differently. The Terroir series is my first attempt to pant the French word for how soil and location affect the taste of the grapes in wine, this began with the painting “Beneath”. The painting Willamette Valley Clouds is another effort to create a landscape with minimalist means, it also a continuation of my exploration in the use of bar codes in paintings. The mixed media paintings use recycled labels and packaging - both for texture and visual interest; and as a design element. The paintings with the resin poured in layers is another ‘what would happen if’ experiment and a look and process that I plan to pursue further.
